Building a deep connection with a neurodivergent child requires patience, understanding, and intentional moments of togetherness. ‘Special time’ is a simple yet powerful way to strengthen your bond while honoring your child’s unique way of experiencing the world.

What Is ‘Special Time’?

‘Special time’ is a short period when you engage with your child without distractions. It’s not about lessons or goals—it’s about being present, following their lead, and enjoying the moment together.

How to Make the Most of It

  1. Follow Their Interests – Let them take charge if they love lining up toys, acting out scenes, or building with blocks. This shows you respect what makes them happy.

  2. Keep It Predictable – A set time each day or week gives them something to look forward to, providing comfort and stability.

  3. Eliminate Distractions – Put away your phone, turn off background noise, and give them your full attention, even if it’s just for a few minutes.

  4. Respect Their Comfort Zone – Some children prefer parallel play to direct interaction. Engage in a way that feels right for them.

  5. Celebrate Their Efforts – Focus on enjoying the moment rather than correcting or teaching. Encouragement builds confidence and strengthens trust.

Why It Matters

Regular, intentional time together helps build connection, reduce anxiety, and create positive shared experiences. It also reminds your child that they are important—not for what they achieve but simply for who they are.
