Transform your home into a sensory-friendly space

As an autism parent, you understand how challenging sensory overload can be for your child. Those overwhelming moments can leave both you and your child feeling drained.

Although, creating a calming environment at home can make a world of difference.

Here are three practical tips to help manage sensory overload effectively:

1. Create a Calming Corner

Designate a particular area in your home as a calming corner. This space should be a refuge filled with soft pillows, weighted blankets, noise-canceling headphones, and their favorite toys or books.

Please encourage your child to retreat to this space when they feel overwhelmed. A comforting environment can give them the tools to self-soothe and regain control, making it easier to cope with sensory overload

2. Utilize Soft Lighting

Harsh, bright lights can be overwhelming for children with autism. Opt for soft, blunt lighting to create a more soothing atmosphere.

Consider using lamps with warm bulbs or adding string lights for a gentle glow. Dimming the lights can significantly reduce sensory input, making it easier for your child to relax and feel secure.

3. Establish a Routine

Children thrive on structure; a consistent daily routine can significantly reduce anxiety. Incorporate sensory-friendly activities like playdough, sensory bins, or quiet reading time.

When your child knows what to expect throughout the day, they are better equipped to handle potential sensory overload.

You are not alone in this journey.

Resources like the One Autism Health app, occupational therapy, and autism care assistance can provide valuable support.

By applying these strategies, you can create a nurturing environment at home that empowers your child to control their sensory needs more easily.
